Data structures and algorithm analysis in C++, 4th Ed.

Recommended by: Prof. Joseph Benjamin Del Mundo

Author Mark Allen Weiss
Place of Publication England
Date of Publication [2014]
Publisher Pearson Education Limited

The fourth edition of Data Structures and Algorithm in C++ describes data structures, methods of organizing large amounts of data, and algorithm analysis, the estimation of the running time of algorithms. As computers become faster and faster, the need for programs that can handle large amounts of input becomes more acute. Paradoxically, this requires more careful attention to efficiency, since inefficiencies in programs become most obvious when input sizes are large. By analyzing an algorithm before it is actually coded, students can decide if a a particular solution will be feasible. For example, in this text students look at specific problems and see how careful implementations can reduce the time constraint for large amounts of data from centuries to less than a second. Therefore, no algorithm or data structure is presented without an explanation of its running time. In some cases, minute details that affect the running time of the implementation are explored.

Once a solution method is determined, a program must still be written. As computers have become more powerful, the problems they must solve have become larger and more complex, requiring development of more intricate programs. The goal of this text is to teach students good programming and algorithm analysis skills simultaneously so that they can develop such programs with the maximum amount of efficiency.

This book is suitable for either an advanced data structures course or a first-year graduate course in algorithm analysis. Students should have some knowledge of intermediate programming, including such topics as pointers, recursion,

and object-based programming, as well as some background in discrete math.

Date of Publication [2015]
Publisher William Andrew

Self-assembled nanostructures based on peptides and proteins have been investigated and presented as biomaterials with an impressive potential for a broad range of applications such as microfabrication, biosensing platforms, drug delivery systems, bioelectronics and tissue reparation. Through self-assembly peptides can give rise to a range of well-defined nanostructures such as nanotubes, nanofibers, nanoparticles, nanotapes, gels and nanorods. However, there are challenges when trying to integrate these biological nanostructures in the development of sensing devices or drug-delivery systems – challenges such as controlling the size during synthesis, the stability in liquid environments and manipulation.

In “Micro and Nanofabrication Using Self-assembled Biological Nanostructures” the options and challenges when using self-assembled peptide nanostructures in micro and nanofabrication are discussed. The publication covers different ways to manipulate, deposit and immobilize on specific locations these biological nanostructures in order to use them in the fabrication of new structures or as part of biosensing platforms. Examples where researchers used biological nanostructures for those types of applications are provided. Finally, future applications are discussed as well as parameters to accelerate and expand the use of these biological building blocks in nano- and micro-fabrication processes by taking advantage of their impressive properties such as low-cost and short synthesis time.

Manufacturing flexible packaging : materials, machinery, and techniques

Author Thomas Dunn
Place of Publication Oxford, UK2014
Date of Publication 2014
Publisher William Andrew

Efficiently and profitably delivering quality flexible packaging to the marketplace requires designing and manufacturing products that are both “fit-to-use” and “fit-to-make”. The engineering function in a flexible packaging enterprise must attend to these dual design challenges.

Flexible Packaging discusses the basic processes used to manufacture flexible packaging products, including rotogravure printing, flexographic printing, adhesive lamination, extrusion lamination/coating; and finishing/slitting. These processes are then related to the machines used to practice them, emphasising the basics of machines’ control systems , and options to minimize wasted time and materials between production jobs.

Raw materials are also considered, including the three basic forms: Rollstock (paper, foil, plastic films); Resin; and Wets (inks, varnishes, primers). Guidance is provided on both material selection, and on adding value through enhancement or modification of the materials’ physical features.

A ‘measures’ section covers both primary material features – such as tensile, elongation, modulus and elastic and plastic regions – and secondary quality characteristics such as seal and bond strengths, coefficient of friction, oxygen barrier and moisture vapour barrier.

Helps engineers improve existing raw material selection and manufacturing processes for manufacturing functional flexible packaging materials.
Covers all aspects of delivering high value packaging to the customer – from the raw materials, to the methods of processing them, the machines used to do it, and the measures required to gauge the characteristics of the product.
Helps engineers to minimize waste and unproductive time in production.

Manufacturing and design : understanding the principles of how things are made

Authors Erik Tempelman, Hugh Shercliff, Bruno Ninaber van Eyben
Place of Publication Burlington, MA
Date of Publication 2014
Publisher Butterworth-Heinemann

Manufacturing and Design presents a fresh view on the world of industrial production: thinking in terms of both abstraction levels and trade-offs. The book invites its readers to distinguish between what is possible in principle for a certain process (as determined by physical law); what is possible in practice (the production method as determined by industrial state-of-the-art); and what is possible for a certain supplier (as determined by its production equipment). Specific processes considered here include metal forging, extrusion, and casting; plastic injection molding and thermoforming; additive manufacturing; joining; recycling; and more.

By tackling the field of manufacturing processes from this new angle, this book makes the most out of a reader’s limited time. It gives the knowledge needed to not only create well-producible designs, but also to understand supplier needs in order to find the optimal compromise. Apart from improving design for production, this publication raises the standards of thinking about producibility.

Emphasizes the strong link between product design and choice of manufacturing process
Introduces the concept of a “production triangle” to highlight tradeoffs between function, cost, and quality for different manufacturing methods
Balanced sets of questions are included to stimulate the reader’s thoughts
Each chapter ends information on the production methods commonly associated with the principle discussed, as well as pointers for further reading
Hints to chapter exercises and an appendix on long exercises with worked solutions available on the book’s companion site: http://booksite.elsevier.com/9780080999227/.

Oscillations, waves, and chaos in chemical kinetics

Recommended by: Prof. Roy Vincent Canseco (CS 130, 131)

Author Stephen K. Scott
Place of Publication Oxford, UK
Date of Publication 1994
Publisher Oxford University Press

The phenomena of oscillations, travelling waves, and chaos in reacting chemical systems began as curiosities but now support an active, international research field. This book shows how these “exotic” patterns arise from the underlying chemical mechanisms. The origin of “chemical feedback” is revealed using three example reactions: the isolate-reductant (Landolt) reaction, the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction, and the combustion of hydrogen. Thermal feedback is also discussed. These mechanisms lead to clock reactions and travelling reaction fronts, thermal runaway, and flames; to oscillations and excitability; to target patterns, spiral and scroll waves; to bistability, ignition, extinction, and hysteresis; and to complex oscillations and chaos in flow reactors. These phenomena are related to important processes in biology, including the development of cardiac arrhythmias, nerve signal transmission, and animal coat patterning.

Simulation modeling and analysis, 5th Ed.

Recommending faculty: Prof. Gil Kenneth San Miguel (IE 144)

Author Averill M. Law
Place of Publication New York, NY
Date of Publication [2015]
Publisher McGraw-Hill Education

Since the publication of the first edition in 1982, the goal of Simulation Modeling and Analysis has always been to provide a comprehensive, state-of-the-art, and technically correct treatment of all important aspects of a simulation study. The book strives to make this material understandable by the use of intuition and numerous figures, examples, and problems. It is equally well suited for use in university courses, simulation practice, and self study. The book is widely regarded as the “bible” of simulation and now has more than 100,000 copies in print. The book can serve as the primary text for a variety of courses; for example: a first course in simulation at the junior, senior, or beginning-graduate-student level in engineering, manufacturing, business, or computer science (Chaps. 1 through 4, and parts of Chaps. 5 through 9). At the end of such a course, the students will be prepared to carry out complete and effective simulation studies, and to take advanced simulation courses. A second course in simulation for graduate students in any of the above disciplines (most of Chaps. 5 through 12). After completing this course, the student should be familiar with the more advanced methodological issues involved in a simulation study, and should be prepared to understand and conduct simulation research. An introduction to simulation as part of a general course in operations research or management science (part of Chaps. 1, 3, 5, 6, and 9).

Understanding aerodynamics : arguing from the real physics

Recommending faculty: Dr. Louis Angelo Danao (ME 298)

Author Doug McLean
Place of Publication Chichester, West Sussex, United Kingdom
Date of Publication 2013
Publisher John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Much-needed, fresh approach that brings a greater insight into the physical understanding of aerodynamics

Based on the author’s decades of industrial experience with Boeing, this book helps students and practicing engineers to gain a greater physical understanding of aerodynamics. Relying on clear physical arguments and examples, Mclean provides a much-needed, fresh approach to this sometimes contentious subject without shying away from addressing “real” aerodynamic situations as opposed to the oversimplified ones frequently used for mathematical convenience. Motivated by the belief that engineering practice is enhanced in the long run by a robust understanding of the basics as well as real cause-and-effect relationships that lie behind the theory, he provides intuitive physical interpretations and explanations, debunking commonly-held misconceptions and misinterpretations, and building upon the contrasts provided by wrong explanations to strengthen understanding of the right ones.

Provides a refreshing view of aerodynamics that is based on the author’s decades of industrial experience yet is always tied to basic fundamentals.

Provides intuitive physical interpretations and explanations, debunking commonly-held misconceptions and misinterpretations

Offers new insights to some familiar topics, for example, what the Biot-Savart law really means and why it causes so much confusion, what “Reynolds number” and “incompressible flow” really mean, and a real physical explanation for how an airfoil produces lift.

Addresses “real” aerodynamic situations as opposed to the oversimplified ones frequently used for mathematical convenience, and omits mathematical details whenever the physical understanding can be conveyed without them.

Simulation with Arena, 6th Ed.

Authors W. David Kelton, Randall P. Sadowski, Nancy B. Zupick
Place of Publication New York, NY
Date of Publication 2015
Publisher McGraw-Hill Education

Simulation with Arena provides a comprehensive treatment of simulation using industry-standard Arena software. The textbook begins by having the reader develop simple high-level models, and then progresses to advanced modeling and analysis. Statistical design and analysis of simulation experiments is integrated with the modeling chapters, reflecting the importance of mathematical modeling of these activities. An informal, tutorial writing style is used to aid the beginner in fully understanding the ideas and topics presented. The academic version of Arena and example files are also available through the book’s website.

McGraw-Hill Education’s Connect, is also available as an optional, add on item. Connect is the only integrated learning system that empowers students by continuously adapting to deliver precisely what they need, when they need it, how they need it, so that class time is more effective. Connect allows the professor to assign homework, quizzes, and tests easily and automatically grades and records the scores of the student’s work. Problems are randomized to prevent sharing of answers an may also have a “multi-step solution” which helps move the students’ learning along if they experience difficulty.

Probability and stochastic processes

Author Ionut Florescu
Place of Publication Hoboken, New Jersey
Date of Publication [2015]
Publisher Wiley

A comprehensive and accessible presentation of probability and stochastic processes with emphasis on key theoretical concepts and real-world applications

With a sophisticated approach, Probability and Stochastic Processes successfully balances theory and applications in a pedagogical and accessible format. The book’s primary focus is on key theoretical notions in probability to provide a foundation for understanding concepts and examples related to stochastic processes.

Organized into two main sections, the book begins by developing probability theory with topical coverage on probability measure; random variables; integration theory; product spaces, conditional distribution, and conditional expectations; and limit theorems. The second part explores stochastic processes and related concepts including the Poisson process, renewal processes, Markov chains, semi-Markov processes, martingales, and Brownian motion. Featuring a logical combination of traditional and complex theories as well as practices, Probability and Stochastic Processes also includes:

Multiple examples from disciplines such as business, mathematical finance, and engineering

Chapter-by-chapter exercises and examples to allow readers to test their comprehension of the presented material

A rigorous treatment of all probability and stochastic processes concepts

An appropriate textbook for probability and stochastic processes courses at the upper-undergraduate and graduate level in mathematics, business, and electrical engineering, Probability and Stochastic Processes is also an ideal reference for researchers and practitioners in the fields of mathematics, engineering, and finance.
