Semiconductor devices and integrated circuits (ICs) are the backbone of modern technology, and thus the study of electronics — which deals with their characteristics and applications — is an integral part of the undergraduate currciculum for students majoring in electrical, electronics, or computer engineering. Electricity : principles and applications, Second Edition, is written for students just beginning their study of electricity. No previous formal training in the subject is assumed. Only arithmetic and basic algebra are used in explaining and solving electrical problems. Although simultaneous equations are introduced in Chapter 6, they are defined and explained in some detail before actually being used. Similarly, the elements of trigonometry that relate to alternating current circuits are explained as needed.

The materials in this textbook are arranged in a logical, sequential order. The terms and concepts that are developed and discussed in Chapter 1 are needed to fully understand Chapter 2. The concepts of Chapter 2 are used in Chapter 3, and so on. However, Chapter 6 can be covered out of sequence or omitted entirely without interrupting the continuity of the remaining chapters.

The first half of this text is devoted, in general to the fundamentals of direct current, while the second half focuses in subjects usually associated with alternating current. The transition from dc to ac is distinct enough to allow use of the material in a traditional dc/ac sequence. However, all of the material is structured to provide a unified introduction to the broad subject area called electricity.

Although no prior formal training in electricity is assumed, it is highly unlikely that a student will not have had an extensive exposure to the world of electricity and electronics. For this reason, certain words associated with electricity are expected to have already entered the students’ vocabulary (for example, switch, plug, motor, television, etc.) Nevertheless, strict technical definitions are used throughout (which may help some students rid themselves of misconceptions learned earlier!)

Since concepts build from chapter to chapter, and within a chapter from section to section, students are provided with a number of stopping points for review questions and problems. These reviews serve two purposes: they reveal areas of weakness that require re-study, and they serve as positive reinforcements for material students know Each chapter concludes with a summary of the key concepts covered in the chapter. The summaries will also help identify areas of weakness and reinforce areas of strength. Students should not skim through this material lightly. Finally, a unique color strip along the margin of each page is used to highlight key terms and phrases on each page.

This truly is the age of electricity and electronics. The solid foundation in electricity provided by this text us likely to prove useful, whether a student intends to pursue a career in electricity and electronics or simply needs the material as background information for other pursuits. The fifth edition of this book has undergone extensive revision, in response to major changes in the fields of electrical and electronic drawing. For example, many of the new drawings were prepared using computers or systems associated with them. Thus, a new Chapter 2, Computer-Aided Design, has been written to help the student more easily read these drawings and understand the differences between computer-aided and manually created drawings.

Most students do not have easy access to CAD systems that will produce complete electrical drawings. Therefore, Chapter 1, General Drawing Techniques, has been retained and strengthened so that a student who has not had previous drafting experience can quickly learn to make technical drawings that are not highly complex. In other words, he or she should be able to work most of the problems in the book after receiving proper instruction.

New subject material includes surface-mounted devices (Chapter 5), the learning curve (Chapter 8), solar power (Chapter 10), robotics (in several chapters), and printed-circuit board drawing (Chapter 6). However, much of the material from the previous edition that is still appropriate has been retained. It should also be noted that much of the material on instrumentation and controls in this book will not be found in any other book of its kind. In addition, no other text contains as complete a listing of standard symbols and tables as those appearing in Appendixes B and D.

These imporatnt standards have been established by agencies such as ANSI (American National Standards Institute), a private agency founded by industry many years ago, and the IEEE (Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.), a professional engineering society. The investigation of the electrical properties of materials that can be used as elements in modern circuits is an important subject for study in the final decades of the twentieth century and beyond.  In addition to having a certain degree of intrinsic interest to a small parochial community of scholars, these materials also form the basis for the worldwide growth industry of modern society.  The words “high tech” appear in print in several contexts but usually within the spirit of describing the industry of the future.  As one might expect, the path that leads from the scientific laboratory to the commercial marketplace can have many detours that may be imposed by certain laws of nature.  These cannot be violated, even with the best of intentions of a well-meaning entrepreneur.  It is to this end that we have formulated a textbook that summarizes these basic laws, which were developed prior to and during the  depths of the worldwide economic depression, and then elucidates their application to the modern-day development of the myriad electronic elements that have been sent into the heavens aboard rockets, have been weaseled under the earth in mechanical moles, and have recently been inserted into the human body to prolong life.

The philosophy of this text is to develop all the necessary physical concepts from the basic laws of nature so that the reader can obtain physical insight into the operation of a particular device.  The development requires an understanding of the elements of mechanics, thermodynamics, and electrostatics, such as one would obtain in the first year of an undergraduate physics course, and a mathematical maturity that would normally be found at the level.

This text is written for juniors or seniors in Electrical and Computer Engineering who wish to gain a knowledge of how the devices that have revolutionized modern electronics actually work.  This course would typically follow an introductory electronic circuits course, where the students is just exposed to “black boxes”.  This text would also be useful for the same level student in physics who desires to gain an understanding of where the physical principles that are being acquired can be applied.  Rather than present a collection of numbers that are either out of date or are quickly forgotten, the text tries to develop just the principles and leaves the numbers for the homework problems, and more appropriately, for the reader’s later professional life.
