The complete guide to cybersecurity risks and controls

Recommending faculty: Prof. Rommel P. Feria, (CS 153, CS 253)

Authors Anne Kohnke, Dan Shoemaker, Ken Sigler
Place of Publication Boca Raton, FL
Date of Publication [2016]
Publisher CRC Press

The Complete Guide to Cybersecurity Risks and Controls presents the fundamental concepts of information and communication technology (ICT) governance and control. In this book, you will learn how to create a working, practical control structure that will ensure the ongoing, day-to-day trustworthiness of ICT systems and data. The book explains how to establish systematic control functions and timely reporting procedures within a standard organizational framework and how to build auditable trust into the routine assurance of ICT operations.

The book is based on the belief that ICT operation is a strategic governance issue rather than a technical concern. With the exponential growth of security breaches and the increasing dependency on external business partners to achieve organizational success, the effective use of ICT governance and enterprise-wide frameworks to guide the implementation of integrated security controls are critical in order to mitigate data theft. Surprisingly, many organizations do not have formal processes or policies to protect their assets from internal or external threats.

The ICT governance and control process establishes a complete and correct set of managerial and technical control behaviors that ensures reliable monitoring and control of ICT operations. The body of knowledge for doing that is explained in this text. This body of knowledge process applies to all operational aspects of ICT responsibilities ranging from upper management policy making and planning, all the way down to basic technology operation.

Securing an IT organization through governance, risk management, and audit

Recommending faculty: Prof. Rommel P. Feria, (CS 153)

Authors Ken Sigler, James L. Rainley, III
Place of Publication Boca Raton, FL
Date of Publication [2016]
Publisher CRC Press

Past events have shed light on the vulnerability of mission-critical computer systems at highly sensitive levels. It has been demonstrated that common hackers can use tools and techniques downloaded from the Internet to attack government and commercial information systems. Although threats may come from mischief makers and pranksters, they are more likely to result from hackers working in concert for profit, hackers working under the protection of nation states, or malicious insiders.

Securing an IT Organization through Governance, Risk Management, and Audit introduces two internationally recognized bodies of knowledge: Control Objectives for Information and Related Technology (COBIT 5) from a cybersecurity perspective and the NIST Framework for Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity (CSF). Emphasizing the processes directly related to governance, risk management, and audit, the book provides details of a cybersecurity framework (CSF), mapping each of the CSF steps and activities to the methods defined in COBIT 5. This method leverages operational risk understanding in a business context, allowing the information and communications technology (ICT) organization to convert high-level enterprise goals into manageable, specific goals rather than unintegrated checklist models.

The real value of this methodology is to reduce the knowledge fog that frequently engulfs senior business management, and results in the false conclusion that overseeing security controls for information systems is not a leadership role or responsibility but a technical management task. By carefully reading, implementing, and practicing the techniques and methodologies outlined in this book, you can successfully implement a plan that increases security and lowers risk for you and your organization.

Design and construction of berm breakwaters

Recommending faculty: Dr. Eric C. Cruz, (CE 111, CE 113, CE 270, Ce 273)

Authors Jentsje van der Meer, Sigurdur Sigurdarson
Place of Publication New Jersey
Date of Publication [2017]
Publisher World Scientific

Do you want to harness the power of science, technology, and innovation to change the world? Do you want to channel your passion and education to pursue a life-long career improving the human condition?

Modern design of berm breakwaters began about thirty years ago. However, to date, there has been a lack of a well-established, formal design methodology on berm breakwaters. The authors Dr Jentsje van der Meer and Sigurdur Sigurdarson combine over 40 years of collective experience working with breakwaters to put forward a design framework in Design and Construction of Berm Breakwaters; covering the science and design practices of berm breakwater structures. The original design consisted of mass armoured berms that reshaped into statically stable S-shaped slopes. The design was adopted in Iceland and eventually led to a development with more stable structures by using available rock sizes, large rock, and more rock gradings than just “small rock (core)” and “large rock (berm)”. This more stable and only partly reshaping structure is called the Icelandic-type berm breakwater.

Written for researchers and practitioners, the volume consists of chapters on geometrical designs of the berm breakwater cross-section, including berm reshaping and wave overtopping, quarry and project management, as well as blasting and sorting techniques, designs for various wave conditions and available rock classes, and case studies of already constructed berm breakwaters.

Introduction to chemical engineering thermodynamics, 4th ed.

Donated by: Ms. Maria Veron Munar

Authors J. M. Smith, H. C. Van Ness
Place of Publication New York
Date of Publication c1987
Publisher McGraw-Hill

The purpose of this text is to provide an introductory treatment of thermodynamics from a chemical-engineering viewpoint.  We have sought present material so that it may be readily understood by the average undergraduate, while at the same time maintaining the standard of rigor demanded by sound thermodynamic analysis.

The justification for a separate text for chemical engineers is no different now than it has been for the past thirty-seven years during which the first three editions have been in print.  The same thermodynamic principles apply regardless of discipline.  However, these abstract principles are more effectively taught when advantage is taken of student commitment to a chosen branch of engineering.  Thus, applications indicating the usefulness of thermodynamics in chemical engineering not only stimulate student interest, but also provide a better understanding of the fundamentals themselves.

Design of analog CMOS integrated circuits, Second edition

Recommending faculty: Prof. Michael Bayona, (EE 220)

Author Behzad Razavi
Place of Publication New York, NY
Date of Publication [2017]
Publisher McGraw-Hill Education

Design of Analog CMOS Integrated Circuits by Behzad Razavi, deals with the analysis and design of analog CMOS integrated circuits, emphasizing fundamentals, as well as new paradigms that students and practicing engineers need to master in today’s industry. Because analog design requires both intuition and rigor, each concept is first introduced from an intuitive perspective and subsequently treated by careful analysis. The objective is to develop both a solid foundation and methods of analyzing circuits by inspection so that the reader learns what approximations can be made in which circuits, and how much error to expect in each approximation. This approach also enables the reader to apply the concepts to bipolar circuits with little additional effort

Publisher ECCS/Ernst & Sohn

This book explains and illustrates the rules that are given in the Eurocodes for designing steel structures subjected to fire. After the first introductory chapter, Chapter 2 explains how to calculate the mechanical actions (loads) in the fire situation based on the information given in EN 1990 and EN 1991. Chapter 3 is dedicated to the models which represent the thermal actions created by the fire. Chapter 4 describes the procedures to be used to calculate the temperature of the steelwork from the temperature of the compartment and Chapter 5 shows how the information given in EN 1993-1-2 is used to determine the load bearing capacity of the steel structure. Chapter 6 presents the essential features that characterize the advanced calculation models, for thermal and mechanical response. The methods used to evaluate the fire resistance of bolted and welded connections are described in Chapter 7. Chapter 8 describes a computer program called `Elefir-EN? which is based on the simple calculation model given in the Eurocode and allows designers to quickly and accurately calculate the performance of steel components in the fire situation. Chapter 9 looks at the issues that a designer may be faced with when assessing the fire resistance of a complete building. This is done via a case study and addresses most of the concepts presented in the previous chapters.
For this second edition the content has been revised and extended. The book contains some new sections, e.g. a comparison between the simple and the advanced calculation, as well as additional examples.
