Hashing in computer science : fifty years of slicing and dicing

A file of computer data is composed of records to each of which a key or identifier is associated. The key is used to search for the address of a desired record. When the file is a telephone directory, searching is easy—the key is the subscriber’s name and the records are naturally arranged in alphabetic order. For data whose records are not easily alphabetized, a hash function is used to arithmetically derive from the key record’s address. Hashing was invented during the design of the IBM 701 machine in the 1950s by Hans Peter Luhn. In the ensuing half century, the hashing concept has found a variety of applications. When combined with cryptography, hashing can be used to authenticate users in e-commerce on the Web.

Professor Konheim is an authority on computer security and an early contributor to hashing technology. Based on courses taught by the author, this book unravels the complicated mathematics involved in hashing as it explains in detail the various hashing methods. It describes:

  • Techniques for audio fingerprinting, the automated recognition of music

There is a software gap between parallel computers and programmers’ abilities to program such computers. Programming a parallel computer requires closely studying the target algorithm or application, more so than in traditional sequential programming. This book assumes familiarity with threads (in a language such as Ada, C#, or Java) and introduces the entity-life modeling (ELM) design approach for certain kinds of multithreaded software. ELM focuses on “reactive systems,” which continuously interact with the problem environment. These “reactive systems” include embedded systems, as well as such interactive systems as cruise controllers and automated teller machines.

Part I covers two fundamentals: program-language thread support and state diagramming. These are necessary for understanding ELM and are provided primarily for reference. Part II covers ELM from different angles. Part III positions ELM relative to other design approaches.

Reactive software must respond to events in the world as they occur. To deal with this, ELM defines an event thread as a series of event occurrences that are separated in time. As the book reveals, event threads become the basis for software threads, leading to thread architectures that can be understood intuitively in problem-domain terms. Readers will discover how ELM captures the logic of event threads in terms of states, providing two patterns for designing software threads based on state diagrams and their activities.

Event threads in the domain can also form patterns. The text explains how ELM identifies the resource-user-thread pattern and the resource-guard-thread pattern, both addressing resource sharing by multiple domain entities. It also covers the case where entities need simultaneous exclusive access to more than one resource, and shows how ELM deals with deadlock prevention.

Prediction methods for fatigue lives and fatigue crack growth are discussed as well as verification by experiments. Load spectra analysis and statistical aspects are also addressed. The first edition of this book was well received and has been used extensively in various courses taught to staff members and students of universities and other technical colleges as well as in industries and at research institutes. Therefore it was considered time for a second edition. In general, the format of the first edition of the book has been maintained, but the whole text has been carefully revised. Two survey papers from the literature have also been added.

Reasons are provided to explain why pin solar cells outperform more traditional pn solar cells. Field test data are reported for nineteen percent pin solar cells and for ~500X concentrating systems with bare cell efficiencies approaching forty percent. Paths to bare cell efficiencies over fifty percent are described, and key missing program elements are identified. Since government support is needed for new technology prototype integration and qualification testing before manufacturing scale up, the key economic measure is identified in this volume as the electricity cost in cents per kilowatt-hour at the complete installed system level, rather than just the up-front solar cell modules’ costs in dollars per watt.
