20 years ago, from July 8 to 20, 1990, 60 researchers gathered for two weeks at Castillo-Palacio Magalia in Las Navas del Marques (Avila Province, Spain) to discuss cognitive and linguistic aspects of geographic space. This meeting was the start of successful research on cognitive issues in geographic information science, produced an edited book (D. M. Mark and A. U. Frank, Eds., 1991, Cognitive and Linguistic Aspects of Geographic Space. NATO ASI Series D: Behavioural and Social Sciences 63. Kluwer, Dordrecht/Boston/London), and led to a biannual conference (COSIT), a refereed journal (Spatial Cognition and Computation), and a substantial and still growing research community.

It appeared worthwhile to assess the achievements and to reconsider the research challenges twenty years later. What has changed in the age of computational ontologies and cyber-infrastructures? Consider that 1990 the web was only about to emerge and the very first laptops had just appeared! The 2010 meeting brought together many of the original participants, but was also open to others, and invited contributions from all who are researching these topics. Early-career scientists, engineers, and humanists working at the intersection of cognitive science and geographic information science were invited to help with the re-assessment of research needs and approaches.

The meeting was very successful and compared the research agenda laid out in the 1990 book with achievements over the past twenty years and then turned to the future: What are the challenges today? What are worthwhile goals for basic research? What can be achieved in the next 20 years? What are the lessons learned?
This edited book will assess the current state of the field through chapters by participants in the 1990 and 2010 meetings and will also document an interdisciplinary research agenda for the future.

Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), such as GPS, have become an efficient, reliable and standard tool for a wide range of applications. However, when processing GNSS data, the stochastic model characterising the precision of observations and the correlations between them is usually simplified and incomplete, leading to overly optimistic accuracy estimates.

This work extends the stochastic model using signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) measurements and time series analysis of observation residuals. The proposed SNR-based observation weighting model significantly improves the results of GPS data analysis, while the temporal correlation of GPS observation noise can be efficiently described by means of autoregressive moving average (ARMA) processes. Furthermore, this work includes an up-to-date overview of the GNSS error effects and a comprehensive description of various mathematical methods.

At the Cancun summit of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s 16th Conference, the parties jointly agreed that the vulnerable groups particularly in developing countries and whose livelihood is based on land use practices are the most common victims as in most cases their activities are shaped by the climate. Therefore, solving the climate dilemma through mitigation processes and scientific research is an ethical concern. Thus combining the knowledge systems of the societies and scientific evidences can greatly assist in the creation of coping mechanisms for sustainable development in a situation of changing climate. International Humboldt Kolleg focusing on “knowledge systems of societies and Climate Change” was organized at ISEC. This event was of unique importance, as the year 2011-12 was celebrated as the 60th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between India and Germany with the motto “Germany and India – Infinite Opportunities.” This volume is the outcome of the papers presented during the IHK 2011 at ISEC, India.

This book will be based on the material of the lecture noties in several International Schools for the Determination and Use of the Geoid, organized by the International Geoid Serivice of the International Association of Geodesy. It consolidates, unifies, and streamlines this material in a unique way not covereed by the few other books that exist on this subjext. More specifically, the book presents (for the first time in a single volume) the theory and methodology of the most common technique used for precise determination of the geoid, including the computation of the marine geoid from satellite altimetry data. These are illustrated by specific examples and actual computations of local geoids. In addition, the book provides the fundamentals of estimating orthometric heights without spirit levelling, by properly combining a geoid with heights from GPS. Besides the geodectic and geophysical uses, this last application has made geoid computation methods very popular in recent years because the entire GPS and GIS user communities are interested in estimating geoid undulations in order to convert GPS heights to physically meaningful orthometric heights (elevations above mean sea level). The overall purpose of the book is, therefore, to provide the user community (academics, graduate students, geophysicists, engineers, oceanographers, GIS and GPS users, researchers) with a self-contained textbook, which will supply them with the complete roadmap of estimating geoid undulations, from the theoretical definitions and formulas to the available numerical methods and their implementation and the test in practice.

This book was first suggested in 2004 by a friend of Prof. Dominador Ilio to put in print the life of an accomplished engineer, poet and writer; one who knew many aspects of UP life since the 1930s. Prof. Ilio welcomed the idea and thought he would write his story himself

After he passed away in 2006 at 92 without leaving a manuscript, his fraternity brothers in Beta Epsilon Alumni, Inc. (BEAI) revived the idea. Nothing much came out of it until 2009 when BEAI President Roger Victor Buendia (now, Executive Vice President & COO of PNOC Renewables Corporation) pushed for the book project in a very determined way by creating in mid-2009 a Dom Ilio Book Project Committee.

Dominador Ilio, Jr. gave the committee free access to the many memorabilia items of Prof. Ilio, including thick notes of what we discovered to be the initial drafts for his autobiographical book. Fraternity brothers led by industrialist Manuel Agustines and construction magnate Isidro Consunji provided the funds for the digital archiving of the memorabilia items and the writing and publication of a biography book.

This book aims to provide the readers, especially the youth, an idea of how a young man from a small town in a Visayan province struggled to acquire an education and training to become an engineer, poet, and writer in order to better serve his country.

Illuminated Isles is more than a coffee book or a commemoration of the National Electrification Administration’s nearly five decades of service.

It is history, tribute, travelogue, pictorial journey–the sum of many parts that makes rural electrification one of the most successful programs undertaken by the Philippine government.

To tell the story, this book is divided into two chapters.

Chapter I consists of stories of energized cities, towns, and sitios throughout the country. These accounts aim to transport you to each place–whether it’s a building city like Gensan or an isolated village in the protected wetlands of Agusan–to show you beauty of place, richness of culture, and the progress that’s possible in an energized community.

The stories represent various regions of the Philippines and are arranged chronologically, beginning with a story on the heritage of Region I and ending with a profile of a day in the life of the floating village of Sitangkai in ARMM. You’ll also find, alongside the main story, a fast fact on the electric cooperative (EC) that services the area.

Chapter II takes a closer look at some of the ECs that energized these regions and the private power companies that helped make it possible. The stories are presented alphabetically, but each one can be read in the order you prefer.

The photographs that lavishly illustrate the book deepen our appreciation of the different facets of Philippine life: from common sights viewed in an extraordinary way to little-seen corners of the Philippines.
